Progress Report 4

Great news! After 2 weeks less 4 hours, Carol is no longer a patient of UVA Medical acute care hospital. At 4 PM as promised this morning a transport crew arrived to move her to UVA Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital. I rode down the elevator with her on the transport gurney and kissed her goodbye as we parted at the first floor. I followed her over to the rehab and found as expected I was not able to see her or even get into the facility. This is hard on us, but the level of safety is reassuring. They even required that Carol have a covid test before they would accept her – negative of course. Now begins my wait for recovery with occasional visits as permitted by the facility. Carol has the hard work to do.

The only other news is not really mine to discuss in any detail. Malena and Dan are in the thralls of inspecting their new house, I get reports as appropriate. I hear about the horses. I am getting reports from Yechiel and Miriam on the West Coast as they update the bathrooms in their condo.

My activity for the past two weeks has been mostly driving to and from the hospital and sitting with Carol. I haven’t the slightest idea what I will do with myself for the next couple of weeks. I do know the coach needs to be vacuumed and the floors washed and other maintenance that Carol keeps up with plus all my usual maintenance chores.

I am sure I will find ways to keep busy, even helping Dan and Malena prepare for the move and putting the house on the market. Or maybe I’ll join in a computer challenge that Dan has given our grandsons.

  1. So glad she is in rehab! Any idea how long she will be there? So sorry you can’t visit. It will be difficult for both of you I am sure! I sincerely hope she will make a speedy recovery! Please tell her that aunt Dorothy and I send our love and best wishes!

  2. I hope the rehab facility is ready to deal with Carol’s feistiness! Load her up with some good jazz music, and some for yourself to listen to especially in lonely times. This too will pass, and you’ll be back on the road. Sending (virtual) Canadian hugs to you both.

  3. Regarding the Computer challenge: I am trying to encourage the next generation of Goldber’s to start learning about cloud computing through a series of challenges presented to them using AWS. I will see if I get any interest.
Of course Josh will teach me Arduino…

  4. Thinking of you both!! Glad she is improving— and if needed I could find you any number of zoom events and meetings to help entertain you!!

  5. Wonderful news. I’m thrilled to hear Carol is making such fast improvement. Rehab will be tough but I know she can do it. She’s a trooper and all her friends are pulling for her.

  6. So glad she is recovering enough to go to rehab!
So sad that you two will be so separated.
A question – do we still use Dan’s address for cards to Carol or should they go directly to the rehab or just send you greetings to keep you?🤗

  7. Paul and Carol,

Glad to hear that things are progressing. Too bad you will not be able to spend much time together right now, but hopefully she will be back home soon!

Sending our love to both of you!
    Carol & Michael

  8. Thanks so much for keeping us updated. I’m sure you’ll find some things to do. Love to you and Carol!

    1. I can empathize with your feelings about being separated from Carol during her rehab. I was not allowed to see a dying friend, whose kids couldn’t get into NYS because they were in California and Missouri, until after she passed. I was really upset that I couldn’t help her through her dying process – even when she was in Hospice!!! I was told hospice patients can have 24-hour visits, but not in the facility Betty was in. The feelings you are having of helplessness and frustration are very difficult. Be reassured that Carol is getting the best of care and she will be with you soon. As always you are in my prayers and please let Carol know that we are praying for special blessings for her healing!
God Bless & Luv – Darlene
